GUESS HANDBAGS : re LV with the colorful logos against the white background, I'd carry it as a fun bag.Yes, it would be a high-maintence handbag! What do you think of the LV manga/anime ones with the eyeballs and the smiley faces on them? I love this bag, however the real deal is way beyond my means (I assume) Iwould love a knockoff and if anyone knows an online site please let me know.I understand buying knockoffs is a bad thing, I've never done it before butthis bag really, really floats my boat.I dislike white handbags or shoes. I have a small white Anne Kleinhandbag to use if no other color works with my outfit. I have onepair of white espadrilles. I do have white jewelry if pearls, motherof pearl and similar shades count.AudreyOh, I guess I wasn't really thinking of pearls since they aren't *white*. Ihave pearls myself and they are more of an ivory with a sheen/luster (don'tknow the proper term for pearls) I guess it's the stark white that I don'tlike.--JennP."I base my fashion on what doesn't itch" Gilda Radner
GUESS HANDBAGS : I am looking for ideas on making a quilt top from family heirloom hankies. Some are delicate and I'd rather not cut them apart. I also have hand embroidered and crocheted pieces my grandmother made and IO'd like to include those also. Any ideas? TIAIt depends on how the quilt will be used. Since the handkerchiefs aredelicate, I suspect this will be a wall hanging rather than something thatwill be thrown around the room. Perhaps you could join the hankies andembroidery using entre-deux as sashing. There are lots of resources forheirloom sewing. If you have access to a web browser, visit. If the embroidery is colorful, you could even find silk ribbon to lace inthe entre-edux sashing. I have the lovliest picture in my mind! Wish Icould see the finished product. Good luck!Cyndi,I have seen some lovely quilts done with cotton squares with a hankysewn onto each square. Usually the squares are all the same color. Withall the new types of ribbon embroidery, I think you could embellish eachsquare as well.PeggyTucson GUESS HANDBAGS : My favorite "Hanky idea" is in a rather casual quilt--but since some ofthe other ideas thrown out her have been rather formal, I guess I wouldgive you an option. This kind of goes along with the lace glove ideatoo, but is really great for the person who might have a few of each andnot too many of either. I have this wallhanging pattern of differenthandbags. All of the handbags are made out of various materials, ultra suede, tapestry (attn: Speph who is trying to use up Furniture swatches), etc.and each handbag is a different style. Some are embellished with claspsand chains and others are drawstring bags with gold-colored drawstringcords. All of the embellishments are on the wallhanging. On most ofthe handbags is a pocket or a pouch. The gloves and the embroidered hankies come in because they are tuckedinto various pockets, or stuffed into the top of one of the handbags. (So you can use stained hankies and just tuck under the stained corner. Some of the "heirlooms" I have recovered did not make it to me inpristine condition.) This was a fun quilt to make, but alas, it is stilla WIP . . .folded neatly under two or three other ones. Maybe bywriting this, I will get the motivation to go and complete the quiltingon it.. . Phebe GUESS HANDBAGS : Cyndi, I have no ideas for you for a quilt top (unless you plan to hang it on the wall, and then you're likely to run into the dust problems I saw in previous posts). I, too, am lucky enough to've "inherited" a number of very old hankies. Some are embroidered, some are exquisite pulled-work, some have real tatting (and some have delicate crochet) on the edges. I USE some of them, about once a week (a wisp of lacy hankie does wonders to soften the hard lines of that gray menswear suit) -- and since I'm not really "using" them, they show no recent signs of wear. I have framed three of them (the most elaborate ones, and the most delicate ones), on "mats" of dark (but not black) velvet). I've tucked some (after a really HEAVY starching) into a "pocket" made from a scrap of a very old "Jacob's Ladder" quilt (given to me by one of the NM "Retreat-ers") which hangs on my bedroom wall -- the lacy points peeking out of the pocket make a lovely bouquet. I've also taken the "less-precious" of them (the newer, the less elaborate; the ones I really don't know who owned) starched them to within an inch of their lives (I've found that these old hankies are almost as tough and reslient as new children) and folded the corners up into an envelope. I blind-stitched three sides of the envelope and left the "flap" at the top. I made pot-pourri (yes, from scratch), put that into zip-loc plastic bags with holes punched into the bags, and tucked that into the envelopes. I sewed lovely buttons onto the flaps (just for decoration -- no real "buttoning" intended), and gave them to people I love a WHOLE lot (yeah, well, so, I KEPT no fewer than five of them -- and my bedroom (and my underwear drawer) not only smells good, it looks good. When the pot-pourri needs a "refresher," I zap it for 15 seconds in the microwave. When it's time for a change of scent, I just fill another set of baggies with a new batch. Hope this helps, although I still don't recommend a quilt. Happy Trails! Sarah in Las Cruces, NM GUESS HANDBAGS : Cyndi, I've also seen a jacket pattern from Four Corners that used hankies on theyoke and shoulders of the jacket. (a good idea for 'leftovers'). I candig it up if you're interested... -Cyndi N. Carolina (kind of shocked me to see another C-Y-N-D-I! HI!)I just finished a quilt top from my Grandmother's hankies we discoveredthis year after she passed away. Following a pattern from "Grandmother'sFavorite Quilts" by Sandra L. Hatch called "Mother's Handkerchiefs" on page147. Each hankie was folded into a butterfly shape and embroidered onto asquare, the square placed together and now have a beautiful quilt in memoryof not only my Grandmother, but all my relatives who've passed away. I'mgoing to embroider each of their names and dated under a different hankiebutterfly in honor of them. I would be happy to mail you a picture and directions if you're interested. I don't have access yet to a scanner to do it on-line.The butterfly idea sounds great! I have been looking for ideas to use myMom's hankie collection in a wall hanging or quilt. She started collectingthem from her relatives when she was in high school. Although, I wouldprobably get clobbered if I referred to them as heirlooms just yet! :)
