Bombay AirPort Procedures ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 0 Carry a pen, Phonelist, $100 with you. 1 Go inside and get a CART / TROLLY to carry the bags. 2 bags not to exceed 72 Kgs. ( To be checked in ) 1 Handbag. ( To carry with you in the plane ) one more handbag like a big purse is also ok.2 First you will arrive at a post where they check the bags. The person there will take the 2 heavy bags from your CART and screen it through some XRAY kind of machine. The objective is to identify metal parts like guns etc. After the check they will put a tape on the BAGS which reads that the BAGs are checked and are safe. 3 Look to your left, and find a WINDOW where you pay the AIRPORT TAX ( 300 rupees only). Do not forget to take the receipt. Watch your handbags all the time. It is a crowded place. 4 Now checkin your baggage. for this, first find your FLIGHT NUMBER. mine was AI-101. Walk in to the hallway. On the right hand side you will find lots of counters serving different FLIGHTS. Go to your counter, with the CART. Take some stickers from the counter, write your name, destination and source name on the stickers. Put them on your bags. Now Handover the 2 heavy bags on the counter and show them the TICKET booklet, AIRPORT TAX receipt, PASSPORT.also, ask them for a window seat, preferably in the front of the wings.( It will help you avoid big queues and if luckey U may be able to get a good view of some of the Europe. Specially LONDON is very nice ! ) They will tear off one of the tickets, and issue you a BOARDING PASS. BOARDING PASS has the seat number and the GATE number, where the AIRCRAFT is parked. Eventually, you have to go to that GATE, show them the BOARDING PASS and get your seat. Also, they will staple or stick two tickets with some numbers which will identify the 2 heavy bags on your ticket booklet. This is like a receipt of the baggage and required in case we loose the bags or any mis-handling. Also, they will give you a form called EMBARKATION CARD. Here onwards you have to carry only the handbag. 5 Get a seat and fill this EMBARKATION form, it asks your passport number, birth date, address, where and when did you get VISA, where are you traveling etc.6 Next you go to a post where the POLICE will check your BOARDING PASS and passport. They read the IMMIGRATION CHECK NOT REQUIRED stamp on the passport. He will keep the EMBARKATION CARD form which you just filled.7 Next you go to a post where the CUSTOMS department people will see your passport, BOARDING pass. They will screen your passport to make sure that you do not have any pending procedures with customs department. They may ask you questions like, Are you carrying any video camera, or other valuables.etc.8 Now read signs to find out how to reach your GATE, and follow them.
CUSTOM HANDBAGS : There is a STD telephone booth in front of GATE 7. From here you can call SANTOSHI_MAI and tell her that all is good !9 In front of the gate there will be another sequrity post, and may be a big line. They check HANDBAGS for GUNS, BOMBS and other TOYS. ( In my case there was an announcement to go to a different gate ) So, be aware, fresh and ready all the time. 10 After this sequrity check go ahead and you will find lots of chairs infront of the GATE enterance. My flight took off 1 Hr late at 7:30 am. So there was lot of waiting. 11 The AIRCRAFTS have good quality food and sanitory facilities. There will be Headphones, 8-Music channels, TV movies etc. 12 Before the flight takesoff, Say Thanks to all the birds for teaching us ( mankind ) how to fly. So much of technology goes into it, that I can't believe people like U and me are building these planes.Please try and enjoy. Feel me with you. I wanted to be with U for the very first flight. Do you remember our earlier travels with 50 sequrity guards in the front ?
CUSTOM HANDBAGS : I know it will be difficult. Saying bye to all family will not be easy. Take it as an experience. We will stay as long as we enjoy, learn and have fun. Wish us some good money so that we can come back sooner. 2. LONDAN or _____ AIRPORT PROCEDURES Londan time is 5 Hr 30 Min behind Indian time. Go to rest-room and take a wash half hour before the landing. So, correct your watch after you land. For Air-India flight they ask you to de-plane with handbaggage. As you go out they will give some token, and tell you which GATE to come back. Now you can move around, see the airport, do shopping, clean yourself etc. But, mostly you will be asked to come back at the same GATE. So like most people you can just hang around there. ( Although there is a 2 Hr stop, it takes all the time for everybody to come out and then there will be another handbags sequrity check, Passport check etc. ) So, no adventures please ( in 15-20 mins. )
CUSTOM HANDBAGS : If traveling by LUFTHANSA, you will have to go to a different aircraft. ( Ask mom about the details ) LUFTHANSA and CHICAGO will be my first choise ! 3. NEWYORK or CHICAGO AIRPORT procedures. 1 One hour before the flight is ready to land, you will be given two forms. 1. I-94 Arrival - Departure Record As you have IMMIGRANT VISA, you do not have to fill this form. 2. CUSTOM DECLARATION FORM Say that you are not carrying any food items (don't worry about Aavakaya which mother is sending),and that value of all new goods/ gifts you are carrying is $100 only. Have this form filled out and ready with passport.2 After Landing, hurry up and try to be the second one to come out. 3 As you walkout in the passage, follow signs for "US IMMIGRATION" This will take you to a queue for Immigration check. Note there are separate queues for American Passport Holders and Outsiders. So be in the correct queue. Read signs, boards all the time. Talk to the people in the uniform. You will Need your US IMMIGRANT VISA sealed envelope. PASSPORT CUSTOM DECLARATION FORM, ( You just filled in the flight ) They did not ask me for the CHEST XRAY. But it is a good idea to carry it in the HAND-BAG.
CUSTOM HANDBAGS : The officer there will see the documents and stamp your passport saying, Passed US Immigration ". He will keep the CUSTOM DECLARATION FORM with him. Then he/she will return your documents and ask you to go another counter, or room. ( In my case in NewYork, it was a room. ) There they will again check your US IMMIGRANT VISA. Open the seal Take an impression of one of the fingers. Will ask you to sign at couple of places in a form. They keep the VISA envelope with them, and return you only the passport. They may or may not ask for the CHEST-XRAY. ( They will laminate the photos and mail the GreenCard in 2 months till then they stamp the passport, and the STAMP acts like a temporary GREENCARD. ) 4 Till now you are having only the HAND-BAG. It is time to get the 2 Heavy Bags. So, look around for the CART / TROLLY to carry the baggage. Follow " BAGGAGE CLAIM " signs. In NewYork, I had to pay $1.5 for getting this TROLLY. In Chicago, it may be $2, so carry some $1 notes. All notes are of same size and color, so be careful and awake. ( I gave $20 for $1, Some people are nice )
